Speaker's Bio
Adele Oliva
Ms. Oliva joined Quaker BioVentures in 2007 as Partner. The firm leads investments across the spectrum of the life science industry, including biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, human diagnostics, specialty pharmaceuticals, and healthcare services.
Prior to joining Quaker BioVentures, Ms. Oliva was a Partner at Apax Partners, where she co-led the US Healthcare Group, focusing on specialty pharmaceuticals and medical devices. She also held positions in marketing and business development with Baxter Healthcare’s Cardiovascular and I.V. Systems divisions and was a commercial lending officer and senior financial analyst at CoreStates Financial Corporation.
Ms. Oliva is a Ewing Marion Kauffman Fellow. She holds an M.B.A from Cornell University, where she was awarded an Albert Fried Fellowship, and has a B.S in Finance from St. Joseph University. She currently serves on the boards of EKR Therapeutics, Semprae Laboratories, Prometheus Laboratories, and SkinMedica.
Connie Fogarty
Connie Fogarty brings more than 15 years of pharmaceutical finance and marketing expertise to her role at AstraZeneca, where she leads a team responsible for sourcing and evaluating opportunities for AstraZeneca to collaborate with diverse external partners, including medical device and diagnostic companies.
Prior to her current role, Connie led the externalization efforts for the Respiratory and Inflammation Therapeutic Area, for AstraZeneca’s Global Business Development organization at the company’s corporate headquarters in London, England. Connie has also held several leadership positions within AstraZeneca’s US commercial business.
Connie holds an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the Wharton School of Business.
Kathy Crothell
Kathy is a Principal at Liberty Venture Partners, a venture capital firm located in Philadelphia specializing in medical technology and IT companies.
Prior to Liberty, Kathy was Founder, President, and CEO of Animas Corporation (NASDAQ:PUMP), a leading manufacturer of insulin infusion pumps from its inception to its acquisition by Johnson and Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) in February 2006. Prior to Animas, Kathy was President and CEO of Luxar Corporation, a company located in Seattle, WA. Luxar was a leading manufacturer of CO2 lasers utilized in cosmetic and oral surgery applications. Kathy founded Luxar in 1988. In the mid 1990’s, Luxar was sold to ESC Medical (NASDAQ: ESCMF). Prior to Luxar, Kathy was President and CEO of Laakmann Electro-Optics, Inc., a company located in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Laakmann Electro-Optics, a leading manufacturer of CO2 laser utilized in medical, scientific, and industrial applications was co-founded by Kathy in 1978 and was sold to Johnson and Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) in 1981.
Kathy is also a director of Othera Pharmaceuticals, an ophthalmologic specialty-pharmaceutical company; Pharmitas, a development stage IT company; Adhezion Biomedical, a wound-closure company; and Xanitos, Inc, a facilities outsourcing company founded and run by her husband
Kathy received her BS from University of Pennsylvania in 1971 and her PhD from University of Southern California in 1976. Kathy has over 25 patents, in the fields of RF-excited lasers, fiber waveguides, thermal imaging, continuous glucose sensing, and diabetes management.
Kathy is married to Graeme Crothall, a successful entrepreneur in the hospital-facilities outsourcing business. Kathy and Graeme each have four grown children and eight grand-children between them.
Mark Leahey
Mark Leahey is the President & CEO for the Medical Device Manufacturers Association (MDMA), a national trade association in Washington, DC that represents research-driven medical technology companies. Mr. Leahey's responsibilities include advocating on behalf of the entrepreneurial sector of the medical device industry to Congress, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and other federal and state agencies.
He has lobbied for a more reasonable user fee for smaller companies, worked to open access to the hospital marketplace by challenging the exclusionary and anti-competitive nature of certain large group purchasing organizations (GPOs), as well as ensure that medical device technologies are reimbursed adequately. Mr. Leahey currently sits on the Medical Devices Committee for the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI) and the Editorial Advisory Board of Medical Product Outsourcing.
He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar and a graduate of Georgetown University, the Georgetown Law Center and Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business.
