Message from the CEO

Dianne Strunk

Council’s Gold Patrons
Give — and Receive

As the holidays approach, we all give thanks for the family members and friends who enrich our lives. It’s also a time of year when we at the Council, like most of you, pause to appreciate the people who have enriched our organizations in the past year through their contributions as colleagues, partners, investors, vendors or clients.

In a year that was difficult for every not-for-profit organization, I have way too many people to thank — starting with you and all the other members who are using Council contacts, capital, information and education to build your businesses. Your participation and feedback sustain the Council’s role as a relevant and meaningful resource in the region.

Yet I feel the need to express special thanks to eight amazing people whose contributions to the Council have gone way above and beyond. All are leaders of Gold Patron companies that have made important financial contributions, but these individuals have truly extended themselves by providing the Council with generous quantities of leadership, guidance, involvement and support.

Thank goodness, these leaders who give so much also believe that they get a lot in return. Asked why they and their companies support the Council, they responded with testimonials I am honored to share with you today.

Rob Weber

Dearth of dollars adds to challenges for technology startup companies

Rob Weber is all too familiar with the funding issues facing technology startups. He’s been involved with six technology companies, either as a founding team member or as a CEO brought in to grow the business. He is also a co-founder of Robin Hood Ventures in Wayne, an angel investment group focused on emerging growth companies.

So when the 27-year veteran says there have been major changes on the funding scene, it is easy to believe him. “What you have is a dramatic, tectonic shift in the venture capital environment that is affecting financing all up and down the food chain of investments,” says Weber, now Managing Director of Wayne-based Antiphony, a management consulting firm that helps companies create sustainable value through innovation.

A tasty transition
Thoughtful preparation and modern amenities make Tasty Baking’s move to new digs a sweet deal

For more than 80 years, Philadelphia’s Nicetown section has been the home of Tastykake, a brand of baked goods so beloved that expatriates beg friends to send them care packages. After all, “nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a Tastykake.”

But last April, Tasty Baking Co. moved its headquarters to a 25-acre site at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. In 2010, the manufacturing facility will move to a 345,500-square-foot building nearby. Along with production, the building will hold the warehouse and distribution center.
